Need new desktop PC
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:34:18 AM »
Hey, it's time I spend some money on a relatively good PC. I actually have little time to go looking for individual components to buy and then put together. So I looked for a normal prebuilt PC that should be able to run games smoothly. I also hope to be able to use it for atleast 3-4 years. I came up with these 2:

http://www.yourpcstore.nl/shop/product.php?id_product=249
Systeem configuratie   Gaming computer X4-945 / 4GB / 500GB
 Case                    MS-Tech CA0300 Raptor

 Processor            AMD(R) Phenom-II quadcore X4-945 - 3.0GHz
 RAM                    Kingston 4GB (2x2) DDR2 800Mhz met levenslange garantie

Network card    Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbit (onboard)
Backside I/O    VGA, DVI, HDMI, PS/2, 6 audio ports, 6 USB ports, S/PDIF. eSATA
Frontside I/O         Audio out and microphone, 2 USB ports, eSATA
 Power                  MS-Tech internal 520W, 120mm stille fan
 Weight                   7,2 kg
 Dimensions            182 x 425 x 483 mm
 Remote Control    MS-Tech MR01
 Operating systeem    Linux Ubuntu 9.04

http://www.yourpcstore.nl/shop/product.php?id_product=307
Systeem configuratie   Desktop computer X6-1090T 3.2 GHz
Case                    MS-Tech CA0300 red or green
 Motherboard    MSI 770-C45
 Processor            AMD(R) Phenom-II sixcore X6-1090T - 3.2 GHz
RAM                    Kingston 2 GB DDR3 1333Mhz met levenslange garantie (max 16GB)
 Harddisk           160 GB Western Digital SATAII, 7200, WD1600AAJS 8/S
DVD writer            Samsung SHS223C 22 speed SATAII
Video kaart            nVidia Geforce 9800GT (green) - 1024MB
Audio kaart            Intel 7.1 HD (onboard)
Network kaart    Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbit (onboard)
Backside I/O    VGA, DVI, HDMI, PS/2, 6 audio ports, 6 USB ports
Frontside I/O        Audio out and microphone, 2 USB ports
 Voeding            MS-Tech internal 750W, 120mm stille fan
Reart ventilator    Spire Bluestar regulated, 80mm stille fan
 Weight                    7,9Kg
 Dimensions      182 x 425 x 483 mm
 Operating system    Linux Ubuntu 9.04

My questions are:
Are either of these worth buying? Or should I look further?
Are the processors good or not, since I have never used AMD and don't know their capabilities?
Thanks you guys.

Hey Lopez, i assume your buying these builds in the UK? and if so, how much are those respective builds priced?  The first option would not be ideal, those parts are old in comparison to today's standards, i doubt you'd be able to play the latest titles at "good" settings for software built for the last couple months.  So you'd probably have to upgrade again in the next couple years (more like a year), definitely will not last you 3-4 years.  The second build looks promising but  6 cores isnt ideal for gaming but more for multitasking (video editing, audio processing, running a lot of things at the same time).  Dont get me wrong though, the second build is better than the first but i heard bad things bout that motherboard (MSI 770-C45) has a northbridge overheating issue. Oh and until valve agrees on releasing STEAM for Linux you might wanna pick up win 7 64bit so it recognizes the full 4 gigs of ram.  Im not an intel fan boy but i am getting a core i7 930 for 200US.  Intel is the way to go, at least if you wanna have  a PC for 3-4 years, Software isnt pushing the i7 series to its max yet.  Moore's law got fucked in the ass.

They are 549 and 649 euros respectively. I guess I will have to continue searching for a gaming PC. Any like guides as to which graphics card, motherboards, and processors I should get (probablyi7 though)?

i7 is very nice, but I honestly like AMD too. I'm not sure if you would care to, but you could also build your own computer. Can probably build it yourself for cheaper and better. :)

There is a small problem with building my own PC. If I buy the parts here in Holland the price is almost the same as if I'd bought it in the store since its all quite pricey. If I import the components (from UK or something) I have to pay import taxes aside from the normal consumer goods/services tax and thus almost making it the same price as local ones. So that's a bit inconvenient. However, if I do build my own (probably Intel i7 since I like it on my laptop) then what motherboards should I get? There many kinds and some have issues with overheating and shit.
I can probably get the components cheap when I go to Germany in October, so that might do the trick.

AMD tends to be cheaper, and for gaming they are just fine.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103652

I have that processor and it does wonders.  The point of the processor for gaming is not how many cores, but clock speed.  I got that upgraded from a 2.2ghz quad core, and all of my game perform much better and faster.  I also only use a gts 250, which is very similar to the 9800 GT, but if you're going to get new, I would go for something like a GTX 460.

4GB of ram is more than enough, and as tastey said, you need to have windows to utilize steam.

From the site you used you could get the pieces for most of the computer

AMD X4 Athlon2 635 95W 2.90GHz / BOX

Asus M4N78 PRO AM3

2048MB DDR2 / 800 Kingston CL6 (2 sets)

WD WD5000AAKS 500GB 1916 / S

MS-Tech CA-0220 nPSU black-orange

MS-Tech MS-N750-750W ATX Val

Sony/Optiarc AD5260s 24x

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM NL

Spire CoolReef II AM2/754/939/940

I looked at the graphics cards, they carry, not much stock, I would look else where.

AMD is gonna be cheaper and might play all of todays games, but it wont last you as long as an Intel chip (non biased opinion).  Hey pixie that AMD chip on neweggs site states its not in stock and its "Deactivated. This item is currently out of stock and it may or may not be restocked." LULZ.  I was gonna use an AMD chip for my new build but most audio software companies tell you to stay away from AMD at all costs (ableton, reason and traktor) so it wont do me good for recording tracks.   For gaming it will work fine for another couple of years but i feel more peace of mind if i got the Intel and i did.  Havent put the computer together as yet but i ordered all my parts, will be assembling it together when i come up next week .  Heres some of the parts that i got:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003FV5XGC/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER   ------------motherboard

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038JE9MU/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER   -------------cpu

those parts might be more expensive than what you might want to pay for but you can get a i7 920 for about 250.00 these days. Im getting the 930 for 200.00 from a local retailer in Jersey. Microcenter.com     And im gettin that specific motherboard to future proof for at least 4 years.   Will be using 2 8800gtx in sli for the moment but will get 2 gtx 460s in the future.  I'd definitely recommend the gtx 460 for you. Their the best in sli if you decide to upgrade down the road.

I did give you suggestions.  You just don't come online very often, so you don't respond back very quickly, I on the other hand have lots of free time to troll the intewebz.

I highly disagree, I have had mine for 4 years and its still going strong, my old P4 was died in 5 years, and I'm sure my current one will last just as long, if not longer.

But then again, I have liquid cooling... which doesn't really play a big roll in it as its shitty liquid cooling. haha

just wait for black friday and/or cyber monday

thats what i'm waiting for currently, although i'm also hesitant with that because xmas is right around the corner from those two days

right now i have two choices, a "mid" and a "high" range system, but with a budget of less than $1000.  If it runs to 1100, its fine, just absolutely cannot go past 1150, my parental units limit for this.

Mid:
i5-760 + evga p55 sli 132 mobo
corsair xms3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC
EVGA 768-P3-1362-AR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) Superclocked FTW 768MB 192-bit GDDR5
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
LG DVD Burner - Bulk Black SATA Model GH24NS50 - OEM
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Intel Core i5 & Intel Core i7 compatible RR-B10-212P-G1
Antec 900 mid tower + Windows 7 64bit

total - 1049.64 with regular shipping

High: (work in progress)
i7-950 (couldn't not justify going the extra 15 bucks from a 930)
EVGA E760 CLASSIFIED "Overclocker's Pick" 3-Way SLI + PhysX 1366 Intel X58 EATX Intel Motherboard
Probably going with an NVIDIA card, just not sure which one yet, maybe SLI if the discounts are high enough
Probably Full Tower case, I've got a spot open currently that can hold it
Corsair 850w PS
Corsair 6GB triple channel mem, not sure which to get though
a velociraptor, probably 300 gb or so with a 1TB for storage?  might need help with this, seeing as how i don't think this will end up a RAID setup.
Air cooling, so maybe a CM V8, or the Noctua?
Don't need a bluray, so a DVD burner would be nice.  obviously i think the dvd burner also can read dvds, and read and write cds
not sure what other goodies i should get

Any suggestions/comments?

thanks in advance

Hey guys, I GOT THE i7 950 bitches! gonna post my rig soon.  (have to reassemble everything again). Hey Ryu go with the i7 950 you will not regret it.  and as for HDD get the 1TB WD drive with 64MB cache.  You wont see that much of an improvement with the velociraptor drives unless you go ssd.  I'm holding off on getting the two gtx 460's right now because EVGA just started shipping the FTW editions (using 2 8800gtxs in the meantime).  2 gtx 460s in sli beat out a 480 and even a 5970 so keep that in mind ($500.00 opposed to $700.00).  Oh and I laugh at your creative sound cards haha (this coming from an audiophiliac).

Ok, I have no experience with Creative sound cards, but I know their software is pretty much a waste of money.  Spent $25 for a disk, and didn't notice that much of a difference, but again, I'm not an "audiophiliac".

If you really are interested in having quality sounds, it looks to me like Tasty would be the one to go to.

Otherwise, google is your friend, when its not glitching.

EDIT:  If I do go with an i7 rather than an i5, then I might just go with the 950, only $15 more than the 930.

BTW, has anyone reached 5+ GHz here?  I thought it was pretty crazy to oc a cpu that much, but I guess its possible.

I'm running a x-fi xtreme gamer sound card, I have plugged my speakers into the mobo sound inputs and then tried it on my soundcard, the differences is jaw dropping. (I'm slightly an audiophile)

Well I heard there was another sound card out there that is much better than creative, although I can not remember the name of it at all.
