Mixing hydrochloric acid and glycerol (glycerine)...
« on: January 11, 2009, 02:46:42 PM »
Hey guys, this may be a totally random question...buy do you have any idea of what will happen if hydrochloric acid and glycerol are mixed? I have searched everywhere and I can't find and definitive information on what will happen. I have asked my chemistry teacher if hydrochloric acid is even the right acid to mix with glycerol, but she won't give me a straight answer. She's afraid the i will hert myself or some shit...even though i have already made thermite, mixed glycerol and potassium permanganate, made chemical smoke bombs, and made hot ice. But she still doesn't trust me. I would just buy what i think i need but i'm not made of money, so i'm unable to do so.Pleae tell me all that you know.
:D THANKS! :D

C3H5(OH)3 + 3HCl hmm. My guess would be that the Cl would bond with the C3 body releasing 3 OH and the 3H from HCl making H20.

Total Guess though.

Don't know the amount of heat released by all this.

She says that the glycerol and some type of acid...i'm guessing hydrochloric acid (based on little hints here and there that she gives me), when mixed with glycerol will explode, but i have no idea how big the explosion will be, nor am i sure of the amount of heat that will be released, neithor am i sure of the acid type...so any input i happily taken into account... :D

Its probably exothermic, but I don't know how exactly they would mix.

The biproduct would be C3H5Cl3 + H20 I think.

All of this is an educated guess at best. I'm not a chem major. Can always try a little. Just dont blow your fingers off.

Hey D-Man, I talked to my Chem teacher today, she said she has no idea what would happen. She said there should be an answer online. She did say glycerol and hcl are extremely reactive. (No shit) She did say however that to get a clue what may happen is find the heat given off and use Hess's law to see what will go down.

WooHoo!!! thanks man. Thats just the answer i was looking for. But how would hess's law help me with finding the exothermic properties?...Maby if i could find the quantum of energy needed to go from one energy level to the next...cuz that is what will give me a big KABOOM. Cuz if i go from like 1s1 to 5f14 that will make it like a freaking nuke...any way, thanks for all your input!

Wow, all this chemical lingo is way over my head (reason why I almost failled Chemistry lol). Only thing I know how to do is a simple smoke bomb lol

I have made several smoke bombs in my days, and they are so easy and fun to make that making them should be illegal! Teehee i just got 5LBS KNO3 (potassium nitrate powder) recently and i am having a hell of a time making crap that burns and smokes with it. YAYA!!!

Well although I am not a chemist, I do know that glycerol is found in animal fat and that HCl is found in gastric acid. Therefore I would seriously doubt it has much exothermic potential. But that is just pulling shit outta my ass.
