I think the problem is, it's missing a "P"

If you cant use CTRL/ALT/DELETE to get out, your rig may be locking up and not in stand by mode. This could be hard drive, hardware or software issues. The easiest ones to rule out are errors on your hard drive and reinstalling video card drivers.

I would also check your event logs and see what is happening before the random shutdown. Also, try updating the chipset drivers for your motherboard

when in doubt reformat
if the problem persists you have a hardware issue, probably mobo or hdd

Rule out the hard drive but opening a command line (Start=>run=>then type "cmd") or (Start=>Programs=>accessories=>system tools=>command).  Once in the command line type "chkdsk /f" without the quotes.  It will tell you it can't dismount the drive and select yes to run on next start up.  Restart the PC and let check disk run.  It will detect and repair any errors.  If it completes with no errors then it isn't your HDD.

Post back with the results.
