That's awesome!! The processors we have can go up to 4.5gh or so with the right components installed. I was just surprised that I was able to get it to 4.0gh with what I have, and at how low of a voltage and temperature it runs at. I don't really play any other video games besides DOD which is why I haven't upgraded the graphics card yet. I'm still waiting for Blizzard to release the new Starcraft  ;D

Out of curiosity, why did you go with AMD KillEm? Was it a budget build? Or do you find AMD better performance wise?

It might be that AMD sounds manly compared to Intel. I'll post my specs in, once I hook my PC up so I can copy paste.  :P

for the questions im asked, yes, its gonna take me awhile to save up for the money, im not gonna go into details but im in a bit of debt, so yeah, trying to grab the pennies off the street :(.  im now trying to really not buy anything not important (computer stuff) just sticking with the basics for now.

and pizzy, i went with amd because i thought it was cheaper, and faster for the price, i do wish i went with intel though, mainly the core 2 duo series, because you can overclock the hell out of them. nice thing about amd is that its 64bit, but intel is now getting into that so amd doesnt have that foot over intel anymore, and with the intel now, they just have the money to do tests and crap to further their technology.

Yeah my friend is trying out the demo for Windows 7 and absolutely loves it. It seems like Vista is taking a lot of heat like that of Windows ME.

just a hint guys, dont OC your processor or ram unless you have a 3.5+ cpu a fucking awesome mobo, like 300+ and expensive good ram with a head spreader

ive fried my old motherboard, cpu and ram and video card trying to OC my cpu and ram, shit got all kinds of fucked up, so unless you got good shit, and you have researched your item to see if it can handle a good OC'in dont mess around with your cpu or ram

thats not true, you probably gave it to much voltage or oced it to much. i have oced many things. some cheap some really nice, i only fried the processor once.

u really have to work to fry ur processor..ive oced a couple times but only on good stuff like corsair and patriot..wich is meant to be oced..dont try that shit on a stick of cheap ram

Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: jwpizzy on January 22, 2009, 11:48:44 PM
You guys are using stress testing programs (Prime95/Orthos/Memtest) when overclocking right? If your cpu and memory can handle those programs for more than 12 hours without error, then you have a stable computer, in theory. And I've done my research on all my computer components and am very confident with its setup. The processor is 3.1gh stock, but this little puppy is a beast (with the proper setup). I wouldn't have overclocked it otherwise.  ;D
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: Ban Em All on January 23, 2009, 03:13:02 PM
getting the perfect performance is all within the ram, the mobo, and the cpu. even if they are all compatible with each other, doesnt mean they are gonna work at high performance with each other. lets say you have two mobos, a pny and a msi at the exact same specs, you pop a stick of ram and a cpu in the pny, and you pop the same stick of ram and cpu in the msi, its possible that the setup with the msi will out perform the pny.

Well also in terms of overclocking, your also going to want a solid power supply and a better than stock cooling system to help achieve the performance of your fancy. Right or wrong?

i was at first..changed my mind in a split of a second.

i dont ever use any stress soft, just dont OC that much,5-10% on memory and cpu,a lil less on the video card..make sure yall buy brand name PS units, since theyr the only ones that maintain the power they state..most chinese power supplies lie about the performance, they state the peak power wich is usually double the real power their PSs can deliver.Best brand out there (to me) is ULTRA,specially the modular units..thermaltake is good too,and they deliver what u pay for.
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: jwpizzy on January 25, 2009, 02:31:57 AM
First off fury, your quite racist for thinking that about the Chinese. Secondly, it's probably true. Thirdly, the stress test programs just make me feel more comfortable/confident in knowing that I have built a stable piece of machinery.  :P
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: fury on January 25, 2009, 02:03:12 PM
ohh.i dont look down on chinese..its just they build their technology cheap to cut down on costs..every chinese PS ive had lasted no longer than 1 year...i know some top brands have their stuff built in asia under american specs..like everything else..but at least they use top grade components.
as for the stressing soft,yeah..it comes handy if u wanna take ur PC to its maximum potential..which if i did..would turn me into the best DOD:s player and eventually a worldwide known "hacker" to look at for. ;)

oh btw, if any1 is buying a new comp, go with BFG for your power supply, because if your power supply frys, so does your whole computer ive learned that the hard way like 4 years back, i bought like a 400$ computer, bought some POS 700watt 30$ power supply, a week later it short circuited and i just saw sparks coming from everywhere

(700watts my ass, it put out like 150-200) so yea dont pay attention if there a PS for like 30$ and it says its 700watt, always, always go with BFG if you have the money

I thought it was time to treat my self, just installed a new GeForce GTX-275 w/896mb's of DDR-3. Of course, that meant a psu upgrade also, Corsair TX750 seems to be doing the job nicely.

What else...Quad Core Intel and 4 gigs of ram.

Time to go hit the server....who wants to be my Huckleberry?

I recently upgraded to win7 rc. I have a semi usb headset. it connects to usb and my sound card, the usb is just to power it. If you have a good sound card, then the sound card wins in goodness, if you have a bad soundcard or your connecting to your mobo, then usb is better.

Since ding didn't answer, it's for a sound connection from your sound card to the video card, so you could send your sound through an HDMI cable.  Just one cable to your tv.  Instead of getting a 2nd cable just for sound.

i'm not sure if you're really that hooked on everything, but look for deals, like such

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5538718&sku=B69-8010 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5538718&sku=B69-8010)

tigerdirect carries lots of barebone kits which is how i built my comp, for fairly cheap too.  some people say they're the devil, but they're just another retailer.  I checked them as well, they currently don't have you're sound card, but i know they have stocked it in the past, just keep your options open.

also, are you really going to go with stock cooling on a really expensive cpu?  if you're going to spend that much anyway, i'd find a larger/better cooler, personally.

The parts are just a basic "outline" I guess you could call it.

Theres still a few things left I kinda need to build it, like an antistatic mat, wristband, and the other tools.  At least I think I need them.  This is my first build if you haven't figured that out yet...

Pixie: Yea I'm planning on getting a different heatsink, but still looking around.  Thanks for the sound card link too.  I don't usually go onto bestbuy for online shopping.

I usually just "check" Tigerdirect, Newegg, and Zipzoomfly .coms

I don't quite know what the budget is for this though, so I might pick up the kit that you've provided.

Question: Is it possible to set up an SSD to boot up the OS and all the program files and have an HDD for storage and such?

My intentions are to have a fast boot/shutdown and have most, if not all of my programs to have a quick load-up time, while being able to store projects onto the HDD(s).

I'm not quite sure if RAID does this, since it is just mirroring.

yeah its possible, and the sole purpose of cheap low capacity solid state drives..ocz has an attractive line of low budget ssd drives if ur interested..60gigs or so

With RAID, you have to have the exact same hard drives, or very super similar.

Read this article, I believe it tells you how to get a setup like what you want.

you may want to look at western digital raptors

fast performance and everyone that i personally know that owns one is very pleased with it's performance and reliability.

also, they're way cheaper than a solid state

you could do a few 300 GB 10K rpm hdds in a raid for fast performance

i've seen the server room at a large casino, they use 15k rpm scsi drives in their servers, and i've used their computer systems, they're fast.

also, something i've learned from building and friends, don't put your sensitive files like music, pictures, and movies on your boot drive if possible, have a reliable storage drive.  cause if windows goes to crap, and you have to wipe the drive and reinstall, you can always reinstall steam and all of your games, but it'll be hard to re do any home movies or scanned images.  my wife recently got done scanning all of her grandparents and parents 35MM film, all 15000 frames of it.  there is like a 17 gigabyte folder on her computer with all of those pictures, not on her boot drive, but just think if all of that died with the boot drive cause you didn't prepare.....

i'd be pissed.

All free shipping and with discounts/MIRs.  Total?  1224.91 without MIR, 1189.91 after.

Need a GPU though, and now you guys can go and flame on: I prefer nvidia, not with too much reason, other than that I have had less problems in my manufacturer-made computers with nvidia than the ones with ati.

And that I don't quite understand the distinctions between various cards, other than (generally):

580 > 480 > 470 ~= 465 > 460 > 450 ~= 2xx

59xx > 58xx > 57xx > 5xxx > 4xxx , so where does the 6xxx series go? not the new 6970s (I think thats what they are).

If Friday acts as an indicator of what will happen on Monday, then Newegg is probably going to be hardpressed to even stay up, with all the traffic going through.
Will update along the way.

69xx>58xx>68xx>57xx>48xx
confusing i know, but AMD's new 6800 series are meant to be the midrange cards, while the 6900 series is high end. the 6990 is the dual GPU card.

and how can you justify buying a GTX580? a card that performs worse than AMD's strongest card, that was made a year ago. the 580 is about $50 more than the 5970, but the 5970 runs cooler, quieter, and uses less power. get that, AMD put two of their most powerful GPU's into one card, you would think that thing would be hot and use alot of power, and it does, but at about the same as a GTX 580, if not less. granted the 5970 has microstutter, and the card is big as hell, but the engineers at nVidia need to be fired. it just doesnt make common sense. im not an AMD fanboy either, i have both nVidia grafics and ATi/AMD. the 69xx series should be out Q1 next year, same with sandy bridge, and hopefully bulldozer.
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: Ryu Takezaki on November 27, 2010, 02:44:37 PM
I wasn't really looking at getting that high end of a card, but the 580 is a single gpu card, whereas the 5970 is from what I've read two 5870s together.  I haven't read too much into the heat production and power consumption, but I have read of issues with stuttering with dual gpu cards, such as the GTX 295 and the 5970.

If you ask me if its worth the price tag?  No.  Someone could possibly get two 460s or even unlocked 465s to run as well as a 480.

But I was looking at getting either one or two of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130572&cm_re=evga_gts_450-_-14-130-572-_-Product (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130572&cm_re=evga_gts_450-_-14-130-572-_-Product)

If not, then we'll see what Monday has in store before it gets sold out while in my shopping cart.
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: Joeseph Geobbels on November 27, 2010, 07:19:08 PM
the 450 is a really nice card, buy that shit yo.

yes the 580 is the strongest single-GPU card available, but why bother when its the same price as a dual GPU card thats faster? microstutter is an issue, but its hardly noticeable.
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: TastyTaste on November 28, 2010, 08:05:10 PM
if you gonna go dual cards, then fuck the 5970 and xfire two 6870s or sli two gtx 460 instead, cheaper and faster.  If you want a single card then i'd go with a gtx 580.  Single cards will lower your electric bill and tdp will be lower, so will heat and noise (not to mention no stuttering, or not as much depending on the game)

i think it was a great idea of nVidia to add a vapor chamber, but i cant fathom hot hot this thing would get without it. it does run cooler than a 480, thats not saying much. SLi GTX 580 is a great idea for $1000, better than an ARES, but what game do you need 2 580's? i just think nVidia needs to work on thermals and power draw right now. we'll wait for AMD's 6900 series to see the competition.

Eh, went with the XFX ati 6870.  Others that I was looking at were the 450s in 2 way SLI, 460s in SLI, and a single 470.

Relatively low power draw and heat production, and double lifetime warrenty by XFX, so who knows?

Well, like I said yesterday, just wait a bit, and buy a 2nd in like 6 months when it's on sale and crossfire that shit.  Just make sure you get exactly the same and you're good.  You do that and I'm sure you could max Crysis.
Title: Re: What's In Your Rig?
Post by: Ryu Takezaki on November 30, 2010, 03:20:01 PM
Ah yes, I don't have crysis so I really can't complain, but if and when the prices for the 6870s go down due to the release of the 69xx series or just in response to the unlikely event of nvidia's cards dropping the price on their 470s or 460s, I'll try and see what I can do.

I'm concerned about my RAM at the moment though, its not designated as gaming or enthusiast set but maybe it can handle my fail attempts at a mild overclock.  Not to mention I haven't really googled the power requirements for running crossfire for these cards, not to mention the heat that would be produced too.

Anyone have any experience or reviews?  I will check later on when I get home and finish my chores and what not.  Oh and by the way, any "good" sites you guys use for research?  I have tomshardware, overclock.net, and neweggs eggxpert forums bookmarked, along with some notebook review sites.  But I could always fit more in my relatively empty list.

firstly why would you post Folding at Home comparing a gtx 580 to 480?  Who actually uses folding at home?  The 5970 is not far away from the thermals from a 580 and the 580 is actually better in idle.  and who said anything bout sli'n two gtx 580s?  Thats madness.

All that says is that one card works as fast as two downclocked cards (it would have to be hot unless they used 28nm which TSMC wont produce until Q4 2011).  There are cases that both trade blows to each other in different benchmarks.

i would rather have the 3gb version. the 1.5gb kind of bottlenecks the 580 at high resolution. thats what AMD has going for them, the actually put a good amount of ram on their cards, but they have eyefinity, so i guess they need to.

1.5 is all you need to game at 1920x1200 (thats the res i play at on my 24inch samsung monitor) the 3gb card helps minimum frame rate about 3-5 fps but not worth the money imo. ....but like i said , it was the only card at the time that had a great heatsink.  It gets HOT down here in the caribbean.
