which would you rather prefer? I've read that the 480 only has a 5-10% increase over the 5870 (both are single card gpus) and its 100 bucks more.

What are the other specs of your PC?
-
That's a pretty objective view....

ATI seems to have the better bang for your buck these days.
-
Yea im thinking going the ATI route and Delta i want to build my rig for September so im most likely going with a i7 920, pt6 deluxe version 2, 6 gigs of corsair dominator at 1600, v8 cooler and the 5870
-
why not core i7 960? or the new 980x, with 6 cores...:)
-
pixie..in the real world shit costs money,
...some of us work to get it..some others inherit it..and quite a few lick fat ppls balls for it
so that pretty much sums it up..lickin fat ppls balls will (eventually) make us happy

well, i still have the original phenom 9500, not a cooler new one like the phenom II x4 965....
i haven't done anything to my computer since....september...?
being poor sucks...
-
yea i'd rather get the 920 and overclock it to a stable 3.4 rather than pay that much for a *960

If you have a 920 I'm not so sure you're going to need to over clock.....but if you want to I'd suggest this...

I'd like to get one and cool down my system.

That may be, but it seems like people still prefer Nvidia, for example.....

i still cant get enough outta my 260

thanks for the info pixie, that corsair water cooling looks good.

tasty, if you're planning on buying anytime soon, you might want to consider this...

you could crossfire the cards and have a 24IN monitor for a decent price....
Oh and you were talking about building an i7 system, how about this one? (SEE PICTURE BELOW)

meh i'd rather a 256 bit card rather than those 128's and a 1920x1200 native resolution monitor like the one you got (samsung). You got the T240 hd right?

Yes, it's a beauty, and it's a TV, which is also fun, I don't even have to get up, just switch inputs to antenna to watch something, :)

ATi is always better, enjoy your housefire with a 480. not to mention that thing sucks power like nothing else. as much as a 5970, which is the most powerful grafics card on the market, due to its dual GPU's.
if you need CUDA or PhysX then get a GTX 480, but for dual monitors eyefinity is king.
2 GTX 460's in SLI are the same price as a GTX 480, but with more preformance. but both are more expensive than a 5870.
-
Yeah, I have the ATI Radeon HD 5870 myself. It runs well, though I wish it was faster in Metro 2033. I'm running at 1080p (1920 x 1080) though.
The other components in my system are:
Gigabyte X58A-UD7 motherboard
Core i7 920 CPU, at stock speed
6GB RAM
620 watt Enermax PSU
1 TB hard drive

metro 2033 is made more for nVidia cars, as it is able to "utilize NVIDIA 3D Vision with compatible cards and hardware."
but i like how you only have a 620W PSU. if you wanted to go with a GTX 470 or 480 you would need atleast a 650 or 700W and good air cooling.

haha you contradicted yourself with the same post there silly. I was thinking of getting the 5870 but now that the new gtx460 1GB cards are comin out i'll consider two of them in SLI. their $220.00 each and run better (more power efficient) and faster than a single 5870 or gtx480 or 5970 (when you consider price/performance ratio) for that matter! $440.00 for two cards in SLI with better performance than a single card that costs the same or even more (WAY fuckin more). If your thinking of getting the same make sure its the 1GB version not the 768 one. Nvidia should have gone with a different naming SKU for the both cards as it will be confusing for a lot of people. Heres a review http://www.anandtech.com/show/3809/nvidias-geforce-gtx-460-the-200-king (http://www.anandtech.com/show/3809/nvidias-geforce-gtx-460-the-200-king)

yeah, if i didnt love ATi so much id say two GTX 460's is the best deal out there. they dont get hot enough to burn your house down and deliver great preformance.
but if you had $700 laying around i would strongly suggest the 5970, as its literally 2 5870 GPU's in one card. but when buying that card, unless you have a phenom II x6BE or i7 980 your CPU will bottleneck it.
-

yea well if you have $1200 laying around just get the Asus Ares :P

wow......
I'll take 2, and a computer case that houses 2 Power supplies, 1 for the 2 GPU's, 1 for everything else.
-
ive seen some benchmarks of the ares, wiked fast.
