Title: Need new graphics card
Post by: [OnA] KatherineLian on April 30, 2010, 10:52:33 AM
Hey!

I'm getting my PC fixed so I odn't need to play games on my shitty laptop anymore and can actually run stuff without my cmputer freaking out :)

Any suggestions for a new graphics card? mine is fried. anywhere between 0-$100... cheaper is better but with good quality obviousllly

I have an XFX 9600 GSO sitting around doing nothing since I got my new video card in January. 40+shipping and you can have it.  As long as you have 1 PCI-E x16 port and at least 450 W PSU.  It'll play all source games well, and some higher end games as well.  It would probably play something like Bad Company 2, but you'd have shitty frame rates.

The specific card I have is 3rd up from bottom, 768MB DDR2.

does it come with a fire extinguisher? im excited to see the TDP, temps and the performance.
will most likely be the fastest card ever.
but fuck, 3 80mm fans to cool that shit, not to mention it looks longer than a 5970. that thing is HUGE.
anyone got ~$1000 to lend?

the 8800 ultra i have is bottlenecking the rest of my comp so hoping to get a dx11 gpu soon.  Probably go for a reg stock gtx 580 and oc it. but im still waiting for Amd to come out with their 6990.

OK  so here's my dilemma:  should i get the MSI gtx 580 Lightning

or two MSI Twin Frozer 2 6950s in crossfire

what i know so far:

crossfire benefits with dual 6950s

faster
future proof
uses full potential of build
quieter by 10dB
uses less power 438 (compared to Lightning 496/513 @930** most likely would oc Lightning to 950+ to close gap on dual setup but then i'd risk more power drain and i got a corsair 750hx for ps  :(

single benefits with Lighning gtx 580

cooler but not by much only 3degrees c (based off of tweaktowns review http://tinyurl.com/43p22qg (http://tinyurl.com/43p22qg) )
less things to fail
better drivers

so what you guys think, send some feedblack

better drivers? AMD fired their driver maker back in december and drivers have been rock solid. also, what about 197.75 and GTX 590 release drivers that let their cards explode. normally i would advise a single card, but i dont think the GTX580 is worth it. price/performance sucks dick. the whole fermi architecture sucks dick. its too expensive to make with little benefits over cayman. the 460 and 560 have been the only good cards from nVidia. two good cards sense the 8800. bad. but then again AMDs whole driver issues during the 5000 series sucks even more dicks. and the heat issues with the 4800 series is terrible. doesnt compare to the 470/480 tho. what resolution are you gaming in? becasue if its 1920x1200 or less the 1GB 6950s will work the same, and cost less.

Heat is only a problem in certain cases.  My 460s come down in temps very quickly, and the auto fan control on the newer fermi cards is way better than the auto control on my older gts 250.

msi gtx 580 lightning is cooler, cheaper and uses less power than 2 6950s in crossfire by ALOT.  Did tonsss of research.  And if i oc it to 900 (ref is 772, lightning is 832) it'll be a little ways off from dual 6950 setup.  Not bad imo.

its still fucking expensive for a single card.  especially when a 6970 performs almost the same for $150 less.

^ not from the benchmarks i've seen, when oc'd to 900 at the core, its about 18% on average "better" than the 6970 lightning.  if you take it over 1gig...well it then bridges the gap closer to dual setups but wouldnt wanna do that for heat and power.

not sucking at games helps a lot..and its cheaper too

comparing one OC'd card to a non OC'd card is like comparing a stock civic to one with all the bells and whistles. the 6970 is worse, but not $150 worse imo.

6970 Lightning IS oc'd but only has 2-3 fps more than stock.  I would say this is a plus because AMD makes a better product right out of the box.  Nvidia makes you "work" for their price to performance cost ratio.  But lucky for nvidia, i dont mind oc'ing.  Works out to be better for my tastes.

both are factory OC'd, but your comparing OCing the 580 even more.

ALL praise the gtx 580 Lightning

Which i have the option for, you cant do that with the already oc'd 6970 unless you do some crazy voltage tweaking or ln2. ...i can get to 900 on the core without voltage tweaks

Just sold my old radeon 5850 for $255 on ebay and got a zotac gtx 560 ti amp edition for $250 shipped (plus it comes with a $30 rebate extra), so i actually got more for less, and with its stock clocks it's already pretty much as good as a gtx 570, and i even overclocked it more to about 1025mhz core without a hitch and its even better than a 570. pretty awesome card. i was skeptic it would be an improvement from my 5850, but my fps at max settings bumped up from about 45 fps to 85 fps at 1920x1080 in bad company 2. should have no problem running BF3 at max hopefully

should be fine but i heard BF3 will be more cpu dependent

fucking 7970. i was excited a month ago, and im still jippy as fuck. it may  not be groundbreaking, but its about half a year earlier than kepler. and its a lot better than expected. and it will only get better after some later revisions. wish they would lower the price, but as it stands right now its just a limited release.
