I've been able to get over 100 fps out of my 246mb x800gt. For a performance boost, start the game up in Direct-X 7 or 8. In the startup options (in steam) enter: -dxlevel 8 or 7. The downside is that the game will not remember the screen resolution settings. So you would have to add something like this to the start-up options as well: -w 1280 -h 1024 (-w x -h y).
